A rather beautiful spring day here in the Otter Valley, missing the showers as we often do along the south Devonshire coast. A maximum of 16.5°C and over 5 hours of bright sunshine, excellent visibility and some dramatic skyscapes too inland.
A cold front moved through here at around 14:30, but all it produced was a thinning band of broken cloud and a sudden shift in wind direction from S to to NW, and a drop in humidity.
Other than that it has been a day of lengthy sunny intervals and a maximum of 19.0C.
A lovely evening with excellent visibility and just a few cumulus here and there.
This April’s mean temperature (11.1C) is now running at nearly 2C above my eLTA and passed 100 hours of sunshine today. Vines are in leaf burst, so better not get a frost!
There was a layer of sea fog out in Lyme Bay but it stayed far out and didn’t come anywhere near to spoil another day of unbroken sunshine and much warmer that yesterday.
A maximum of 25.2C at 12:50 then a light sea breeze sprung up and the temperature fell back to around 22C, and that’s where it stayed all afternoon.
Today was the warmest April day since 26.8C on the 23rd in 2011. What is so remarkable about today’s warmth was that if the sea breeze had failed it would have been a couple of degrees higher than that, and also today’s warmth comes after a very long run with a complete absence of any warm days. In 2011, the heat on the 23rd came after two weeks of steadily building heat and dry weather.
Loads of sunburnt people about this afternoon and yet the UV didn’t seem that high, I recorded a UV maximum of only 5.2 which is around normal for this date.
A maximum of 19°C and unbroken sunshine all day has helped bring spring forward. Everything seems to be catching up after that cold March. The may blossom is coming out and I have seen bluebells in flower. The countryside is on its transition to summer.
It has been a cloudy day with a maximum of 11.3°C but spring is ignoring the cool feel to the season so far and advancing rapidly. April is nature’s transitional month here where the countryside goes from looking rather winter-like to summer in just a few weeks.
A gloriously bright day with long sunny intervals giving 9 hours of sunshine. Despite the sun now reaching an elevation of 46° the temperature struggled (maximum of 10.9°C) due to a breeze coming in off a still cold sea (8.6°C).
As with March, sunshine levels continue to struggle with less than 10 hours of sunshine this month so far. April is a sunny month with it usually getting over 50% of the available sunshine. But it has warmed up a little and today’s maximum of 14.1°C is a bit more spring-like.
A maximum of 13.6°C today and nearly 7 hours of strong sunshine made it feel definitely a bit more like spring. Everything seems to be catching up with blossom coming out everywhere and the lawns are a carpet of celandines, daisies, primroses and dandelions. Lovely!
A rather remarkable month after the relatively benign conditions through the winter. The dullest, wettest and snowiest March in my record. In fact it was the snowiest of any month and put December 2010 to shame. The 2nd coldest March after 2013 (5.2C) and the first ‘ice day’ on the 1st since the 25th December 2010. A very high amount of sunless days and no cloudless days!
