A little over halfway through this month and so far it has been warmer than normal by both day and night.
Rainfall above average and sunshine somewhat below.
1st – 18th
Mean minimum = 9.8C
Mean maximum = 17.5C
Mean = 13.7C
Rain = 49 mm
Sunshine = 67 hours.
Days of no sunshine = 3.
A rare, early October grass frost recorded on the 7th (-1.1C). Only 4.1 hours of sunshine recorded from the 12th – 17th!!
Not quite as windy here in this reasonably sheltered river valley spot as other areas of the South West but we are exposed somewhat to the south (the coast) and the wind was frequently gusting over 40 mph with one gust reaching 52 mph. This is the highest wind speed I have recorded this year.
Rain has mainly been in the form of drizzle but there have been the odd heavier bursts. Today’s rain now up to 15.6 mm. Monthly total at 25.2 mm.
Wind has eased off a little recently but still hovering around 25 to 35 mph. A few trees and large branches down here and there. Exmouth seafront was impassable in places due to flooding from the waves crashing over the wall. Any cars left alongside the Esplanade in Sidmouth will have been totally pebble-dashed by now. Dangerous to walk along there without a hard hat on.
Another pleasantly warm October day with a maximum of 21.7C and pretty much unbroken sunshine all day.
Looking at the forecast, there could be some unusually warm nights over the next few days.
My highest October minimum was 16.9C on the 3rd in 2013. Overnight Friday and into Saturday morning looks like a contender. Maybe a minimum of 17C to 18C?
Temperature holding up this evening at 17C but no record on the cards methinks as the sky is clear.
A mostly sunny and warm day with a maximum of 22.5C.
This makes it the warmest October day since 2011 with 25.6C on the 3rd.
Dew points were around 17C for most of the afternoon making the gentle sea breeze feel soft and warm. With the first hints of autumnal colour starting to appear and the deep blue sky, it made for a beautiful, colour contrasting day.
Sea breezes in October are not common and we’ve had quite a few lately.
A mild, calm evening – feeling more like summer than autumn.
Mean temperature, rainfall and sunshine all around the average in what was a rather non-average month with wide variations throughout. Mostly a dry month except for 4 days (20th – 23rd) when 47.0 mm of rain fell, that’s 91% of the monthly total. A notable windy spell for September from the 16th – 21st in what was otherwise a calm month. Highest September pressure recorded on the 24th with 1039.5 hPa. A run of very cold nights from the 24th – 30th. Coldest September day on record on the 22nd with 12.7C. I could go on….. So a very interesting month even if the statistics show otherwise.
